Reopening
On the 5th April 2025, we invited local residents and BH members to watch the opening event. The Normans Bay Residents’ Association provided refreshments and asked journalist and former presenter, David Dimbleby to cut the ribbon. It will now be used as a public bookcase and seed swap.
Restoration
The restoration started in August 2024. The first step was to remove all the glass panes and door before contracting a sand-blasting company to remove the old paint. With help from the local community, an undercoat was immediately applied to prevent the sea air corroding the exposed cast iron.
We fully re-glazed, filled holes and applied a fresh coats of ‘currant red’ gloss to the box.
One of our members, Nigel Woodford offered to gild the crests. We had originally planned to use a gold coloured paint but Nigel, who has a lot of experience in gilding, has been able to produce a really spectacular finish. We are extremely grateful for his help.
Precondition
This K6 telephone box is the last one of its kind in Bexhill accessible to the public. Bexhill Heritage bought the kiosk from BT (for £1) after they decommissioned the box in 2021. It was in a sad and dirty condition but structurally sound.
